May is National Asparagus Month and we’re big fans of this nutritious and delicious vegetable. We always try to feature it on our menu when it’s in season.
The season is a pretty short one in Britain, running from May to June, but it is considered to be the best in the world.
Asparagus comes in green, purple and white and is a great source of fibre as well as being rich in Vitamins A, B and C, as well as folic acid.
Choosing asparagus
When you’re choosing your asparagus, you should go for firm but tender stalks with good colour and closed tips. It loses its flavour and tenderness very quickly, so it is best eaten on the day you purchase it.
How to prepare asparagus
Before asparagus is cooked, it needs a good wash in some cold water, then you can remove the ends of the stalks.
How to cook asparagus and dish ideas
You can boil or steam asparagus until it is just tender, which usually takes roughly four to seven minutes, depending on the thickness of the stems.
It tastes delicious on its own with some melted butter and salt and pepper, or you can use it in a stir fry with lots of other veggies. Asparagus also tastes great with eggs and the spears make a great dipper for the egg yolk.
