We’re celebrating our anniversary at The Swan this month after nine wonderful years of serving delicious food and drinks and offering cosy rooms for getaways to our guests.
We have run businesses in Bampton for more than 10 years including two gastropubs and we maintain that our secret to success is offering the best seasonal and Westcountry sourced food. We also provide a friendly and inviting atmosphere thanks to our team’s excellent customer service.
Top 50 gastropub
Our chef-patron Donna says: “I always wanted to own and run my own pub and now here we are, almost a decade on, celebrating our anniversary and being one of the top 50 gastropubs in the UK. It’s a dream come true!
“We started at The Quarryman’s Rest and took on The Swan in 2011. We were constantly looking to the future, which inspired us to open Spelt (hyperlink to Spelt website) in 2019. It has been another exciting venture for us.
“We are so lucky living here in the Westcountry, since opening we have had local farmers supplying us with beef, rare breed pork, lamb and poultry and the fishing communities providing us with the freshest fish. On the menu at the moment we have fillet of Newlyn hake and breast of Creedy Carver duck.
“Our ethos has always been to provide good food, sourced locally wherever possible, while supporting other small businesses in the community too. It is a great feeling serving a dish and knowing the provenance of every ingredient.
“We have built a small but dedicated team and we’ve been supported since day one by the community here in Bampton which we are thankful for.”
With nine years under our belts, we’re excited to make plans for the next decade of business.
Donna adds: “I am really lucky to be able to do the thing I love as a job, so on my days off you’ll still find me in the kitchen. I can’t get enough of it really and I feel excited to spend even more years doing what I love.”
Low food miles
Our chef-patrons Donna and Paul have seen food fashions come and go but have always been ahead of the trend, including the trend towards reducing food miles, which has been key in staying busy and popular with locals and visitors during many years of business.
Donna continues: “We have always tried to stick to our ethos of sourcing as much local produce as possible and using what is in season. So, with much talk of food miles over past years, we were already in the right place. The fact that if it’s not travelling hundreds of miles and is homegrown on your doorstep, surely means that its fresher and not going to cost you an arm and a leg?”
Atmosphere at The Swan
Paul and Donna have learnt a lot over the years, including the art of delegation and carefully curating an inviting atmosphere for guests.
Paul, who is a leading chef with more than 25 years’ experience in the industry, says: “I think we’ve managed to strike the perfect balance here at The Swan between a traditional pub that suits local regulars and a more contemporary eatery to bring in clientele from further afield. We’ve also got rooms so people come and stay and use us as a base to explore the area.”
We have three comfortable B&B rooms available for guests who want to spend longer with us or who would like a base for rambles and exploration on Exmoor.
